Mental Toughness To Reach Your Goals
Kirk Mango is a former Division I National Champion, 3-Time All-American, 3-Time Hall of Fame Athlete, and was selected in 2009 as #8 on Northern Illinois University’s Top 50 Huskies of All-Time list.
In high school, however, his coach told him he wouldn’t make it. He wasn’t willing to accept that evaluation. So Mango, who says he was a mediocre gymnast at the time, set his sights on become a state champion—in 10 months.
Obviously, he met his goal!
What choices did Mango make, what mental mindset did he embrace to make it to the top—and even publish a book, “Becoming a True Champion?”
He chose to focus on the process, Mango says. And that’s what parents, coaches and sports kids need to do.
“It’s not about the achievement, but the willingness to go through the process,” he said in a recent interview. “I associate the idea of taking on the challenge with building my confidence and self-esteem,” he said.
Going through the process of having the coach doubt his abilities made him focus on the process, which ultimately built his confidence.
It’s important for sports kids to focus on areas they can control, says Mango.
“It’s important to set priorities, take challenges and make commitments.”
If kids, parents and coaches focus on these issues, kids are more likely to build self-esteem in sports, he says.
We’ve got more tips from Mango, who not only made it to the top, against the odds, but is dedicated to helping kids make the most of their sports experience.
