Coaches Who Instill Fun in Youth Sports

Lisa here from Kids’ Sports Psychology to tell you about how my 6-year-old’s first soccer practice went- and why I hope your kids have similar experiences.

I’m here to report the practice went very well. I’m thrilled with my son’s coaches this year.

Why?

My son’s two coaches said they wanted the kids to have fun- and they delivered.

Here’s what my son, Michael, had to say:

“It was super fun because of all the games.”

The kids played sharks and minnows with the ball, and then had a very low-key scrimmage.

Michael felt comfortable leaving in the middle of the scrimmage. He was done after 45 minutes of practice- and that was fine with the coaches!

Why is having fun, especially for kids who are just starting sports, so important?

It’s important because it sets the stage for what we hope will lead to a lifelong love of sports. A recent study showed that above all, kids want to have fun in sports.

So… if you want your children to stay in sports for the long haul, be sure to attend those first few practices and games. Make sure the coaches focus on learning and having fun- not on the score or the win.

Make sure your coaches communicate well with both kids and parents. And be on the lookout for coaches who try to establish a team that feels like a “family.” For example, our team will attend a professional soccer game together this month.

  1. A coach really makes or break a season. And when a player is young enough he/she can make or break your child’s love of sports! Most players want to have fun, plain and simple. Yes, we all like to win and winning is certainly more fun than losing, but you can have fun and learn to love sports even if you lose.
