Positive Self-Talk in Youth Sports
Just before a game kids should have a routine to help them mentally and physically get ready.
But often, young athletes neglect the mental preparation part of their warmup routine…
Positive self-talk should be one part of their pregame routine.
For example, positive self-talk might include:
- I’m quick on my feet.
- I’m a good team player.
- I often come through in a crunch.
- I communicate well with my coaches and other players.
- I attended all the practices and am well prepared for this game.
Just before the game or competition, kids should take two to three minutes to recite these positive self-talk statements, or ones you help them create.
Positive self-talk is an important part of kids’ pregame routines. Such routines help them be more proactive with their mental game and help them avoid falling into negative thinking, doubts or worries.
Along with reciting positive self-talk statements, routines for young athletes could include visualization (seeing themselves throw a great pass, for example), listening to appealing music to help them relax, or throwing a few free throws.
